Keeping it Zen: How to turn your yard into an oasis of peace

Wouldn't it be nice to have a special place in your home to go to after a long and tiring day? How about turning your backyard into a zen garden oasis?

After a long day, the only thing you want to do is find a peaceful place to relax and unwind. If you are into yoga or meditation, finding a place where you can engage in these practices without being bothered is a top priority.

Instead of leaving your home to find an oasis of peace, why not turn your yard into a tranquil space?

Your home should be the one place you can always go to find peace and relaxation. With the current issues happening in the world, for many, being able to leave home is a challenge. That’s why making some changes to keep your yard Zen is in your best interest.

Find your ground

When it comes to finding the most relaxing spot in your backyard, you’ll want to make sure that it’s separate from where you entertain guests. You might also consider making sure it’s private and away from prying eyes. This way, you can meditate or practice yoga without the neighborhood watching.

If you don’t currently have a relaxing spot, the first thing you’ll want to do is find one. Once you have that picked out, you can then add elements to make it the perfect getaway.

This might include trees or shrubs for privacy, or even a gazebo or patio to give you level ground so that you can lose yourself in meditation or yoga. You might also consider adding a yurt or round tent to create the ideal space for yoga or prayer.

Water features can soothe your soul

Listing to the sounds of running water can be incredibly calming and soothing. When transforming your yard into an oasis of peace, make sure to add a water feature. Some examples are a koi pond with a waterfall, a small fountain, or even a hot tub.

While it may not sound like having a hot tub in your backyard will contribute to peace and relaxation, you might be surprised. Listening to the bubbling water won’t just help calm your mind and soul. Sitting in the warm water will also de-stress and relax your body. Furthermore, it could make your yard even more relaxing.

Scents can give you peace of mind

Another way to achieve a calming feel to your backyard landscape is to add delicately scented flowers or herbs to your backyard oasis.

Flowers such as lilies, roses, lilacs, wisteria, or azalea add soft scents that can help you feel calm and relaxed while you meditate or practice yoga. You might also consider adding choke cherry trees to your space. Not only will these fill the area with a delicious scent, but they also provide shade.

If you’re looking for a way to keep bugs at bay, then adding specific herbs to your outdoor space can help—and they can also contribute scents to help soothe your mind. You could also consider adding citronella, cajeput, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, or lemon balm.

Keep distractions to a minimum

Unless you live in the country far away from neighbors and streets, you will be exposed to various sounds while in your backyard. Although you won’t be able to completely eliminate them, you could find a way to minimize the distractions.

When it comes to loud neighbors or traffic, consider adding brick walls, modular walls or fences, or a brushwood fence to your backyard. These materials are incredibly beneficial in reducing noise pollution. They can also create a private sanctuary where no one can see you.

If you decide to put up a brick wall or modular fence, you can always add creeping vines or hedges to further block out the sound and add a more natural feel to the area.

You might also consider adding speakers to your Zen space so that you can listen to music. Although the sounds of nature can be just as soothing and relaxing as chants or New Age tunes, you may not be able to hear them over the sounds of the city. By adding speakers to your space, you can block out other sounds to find your place of peace.

Connect with nature to reduce stress

Being outside and connecting with nature is a great way to reduce your stress. Since you may not always have the opportunity to venture too far from your home, a backyard oasis is definitely a great idea.

With the right elements, you’ll be able to escape the stress and worries that built up during the day. Fortunately, you won’t have to go far to find your inner peace. Having a zen garden could do the trick!
